It is our contention that, unlike most other purchases where egoistic (i.e., self-centered) concerns are likely to drive decisions—with the notable exception of charitable giving (e.g., Fisher, Vandenbosch, and Antia 2008)—organic purchase decisions are likely to extend beyond personal concerns and include â€Å"othersbased† concerns as well (e.g., societal and ecological concerns). Is Human Suffering A Problem Is Human Suffering a Problem? The Christian tradition is haunted by a significant mark: Suffering. The question that arises from this suffering is if God is the omnipitous being that Christians believe Him to be, why would He let His people, whom he loves, suffer great pains and horrible deaths? According to premises derived from theologians and followers of the Bible, God is all loving. If that is true, then God would not want His people to suffer, but by just looking around us we see that suffering, in fact, is happening. If there is suffering going on that God does not want, then He would be able to stop that suffering since He also believed to be all powerful, yet suffering still goes on. Why? Hopefully by the end of this paper I will be able to answer that for myself. Suffering needs little support for its existence, for things such as the Holocaust. Elie Wiesels book, Night, documents the suffering of the Jewish people and his own personal suffering during the Holocaust. This massive amount of suffering is very hard to justify. How could God let this genocide take place? To answer that question we must further examine the original premises that we based the first conclusion upon: God is all-powerful and God is all-loving. To say that either one of these postulates are true would disrupt the foundation of the Christian beliefs. So we must dig deeper and look at the thought that God does not want suffering. Since suffering indeed happens, and God being the all-powerful individual and could stop suffering from happening if He wanted, then God must want suffering to happen for a reason. Thats strange, since we are saying God is also all-loving. God must need suffering to happen for a reason, but at the same time not necessarily want it to happen. What reason could God have for letting people whom He loves die horrible and painful deaths? Not only do these deaths effect the person, but also all the people who have been touched by that person because they suffer as well. To say that God may not have control over who suffers and who does not makes Him seem like hes not all-powerful, so God must play a part in this suffering. There are two reasons one can formulate that might give justification to this terrible suffering. One might be that we suffer as a test to prove our faith in God can survive no matter the circumstances. We see this test arise in the book of Job. Job is a man whom has done no wrong, has a great family, and a strong belief in God. According to the Bible, God puts the fate of Jobs in Satans hands. Satan reaps everything from Job except for his life. Job never questioned the existence of God or His almighty power, but Job did question Gods silence throughout his turmoil. When God finally answered, Job was rewarded for not loosing faith and spoken of Me what is right(Job 42:8). Job suffered a great deal and still did not loose his faith in God, and in the end God gave Job twice what he had before. Job passed Gods test of suffering. In Wiesels Night we see a different situation. Wiesel, like Job, had strong convictions about his faith. During the course of the book we see Wiesels faith weaken with the increasing suffering of the Holocaust. We see him go from praying and weeping to Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever(pg. 32). Wiesel obviously did not pass the inquest as Job did, that is, he lost some of his faith about Gods absolute justice(pg. 42). Could God have been testing Wiesel and his fellow Jews to see if their faith was as strong as they believed it to be? The difference between Job the Holocaust was that God never hurt Jobs body, however the Jews were slaughtered by the thousands. Maybe if Wiesel and his Jewish people all had kept their faith strong, then they might not have suffered such a great loss, but we will never know that for sure. There is another account of

The first successful IVF treatment in the US took place in 1981, and there have been approximately 500,000 babies born world-wide with the aid of IVF treatment since then. The Merits of Equitable Fairness in the Context of Injunctions - Essay Example At times injunctive relief can be obtained in cases in connection with damages or as a substitute for damages.2 The merits of the fairness of injunctive relief are contained in Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981 which provides that: The High Court may be order (whether interlocutory or final) grant an injunction or appoint a receiver in all cases in which it appears to the court to be just and convenient to do so.3 Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981 therefore contemplates that injunctive relief will only be granted when the court considers it fair to do so. Fairness is derived from the use of the terms â€Å"just† and â€Å"convenient†. In order to understand how the terms just and convenient amount to fairness in the proceedings it is necessary to examine how courts exercise the jurisdiction for granting injunctive relief as provided for under Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981. ... As Charleton observed, a prohibitory injunction seeks to regulate one party by forcing that party to go back to behaviour that is consistent with the terms of a contract. Presumably, the party has either failed to act in certain way or has stopped acting in that way. By ordering a prohibitory injunction, the parties are expected to continue as if nothing had come between them when one party is forced to act in a way that he or she no longer wishes to act.7 It can be argued that the prohibitory injunction achieves equitable fairness because it remedies situations in which, a party to an agreement discontinues a contractual obligation to the detriment of the other party who has invested significant resources in reliance on the continued commitment on the part of the offending party not to do something in particular. All of the appearances of the witches occur during the night deep in the wood, where it is hard to tell reality apart from a paranoid imagination. The light and your eyes may play tricks on you causing you to think or believe something fictional. This is why Shakespeare only had the witches materialize under these circumstances, to enhance the effect of the supernatural. Light is also used as a metaphor for life. Too many people look at the negativities in music, Rap music to be specific. Rap music can have negative effects on those who listen to it, but just as easily and equally have a positive and beneficial outcome.Yes, many rappers use vulgar derogative terms to describe women and may influence its listeners to break the law or things of the like; but it can also open our eyes, we can learn new things from it and it can influence us to be better people and do things, good things, with our lives. Now Rap isn’t anything new it’s been around since about the 1970’s and been influencing those who listen to it for about 40 years now (â€Å"Rap†). When people hear the term â€Å"rap music† their initial thought will be à ¢â‚¬Å"that’s bad† or â€Å"that’s demeaning to women† which in a sense is true. For example the song â€Å"Walk this way† performed by Aerosmith and Run D.M. C. is about how a young high school student is lead through his first sexual experience by a debauched cheerleader. In a better known song â€Å"Make it Rain† by Fat Joe he says â€Å"Owwwww mami's body is banging, man/ she got it, man/ she does it all She gets it popping with no hands† And then there’s the song almost everybody knows by Jay-Z. â€Å"99 problems†, where he refers to women as â€Å"bitches†. However, he opts to use the information he has to benefit himself, thus he is greedy and self centered. Moreover, he is immoral and promiscuous because he went to the tower with the expectation of a passionate night , yet it was common knowledge that the queen was a married woman. However, it should be noted that the story is not an accurate representation of French history. However, the story is an entertaining and highly emotional play. Color and shade have been used to give the story an expressionists touch in order to add emphasize on the dark, sinister plot. The dark shade also gives the film a sense of historical realism. The story revolves around two major themes. These are revenge and politics. However, sex,, death, greed and betrayal are also evident in the plays. The queen is driven by her desire to avenge all men. She is beautiful and used her wits and beauty to lure young, clueless men to her chambers. She then kills them and throws hem into the river. Politics, on the other hand, is very dominant in the story. For instance, when Buridan escapes, instead of reporting the queen so that she could be punished for a murder, he decided to use the knowledge he had to further his political aspirations. This shows that to him, political power outweighs justice. Betrayal in the story is evident throughout. For instance, the queen betrays the king when she has affairs with other men. Also, she betrays her lovers when she has then killed to quench her thirst for revenge. So many people betray and blackmail each other in exchange for political power throughout the play. Death is also prevalent in the film, making it extremely sad to watch. For instance the death of the male nobles men who were killed by the queen. It was said that everyday, bodies would be found floating on the Seine. This shows that death was a normal occurrence in that society. The drama has played the role of passing the influential antifeminist message to the world. The message rocked the stages in Europe when it had premiered for the first time. The general concepts depicted in the play lie in addressing the key issues in society, such as the gender imbalance, political influences and unprincipled traditions where murder seems to be the norm. Culotti’s Pizza operates strictly on a carryout basis. Customers pick up their orders at a counter where a clerk exchanges the pizza for cash. While at the counter, the customers can see other employees making the pizzas and the large ovens in which the pizzas are baked. Instructions: Identify the six principles of internal control and give and example of each principle that you might observe when picking up your pizza. (Note: It may not be possible to observe all principles.) The six principles of internal control are establishment of responsibility, Physical, mechanical, and electronic controls, segregation of duties, independent internal verification, documentation procedures, and other controls. 1.Establishment of responsibility: Establishment of responsibility depends on if one or more employees are receiving money from the customer. If this is the case it could cause an issue with the cash register coming up short. The manager would then have difficulty determining which individual is responsible for the shortage. 2.Physical, mechanical, and electronic controls: Physical controls pertain to safeguarding of assets, and records that help protect the company’s assets. Mechanical and Electronic controls safeguard assets and help intensify the accuracy of and responsibility of the records in accounting. Physical, Mechanical, and Electronic controls are imperative which include examples such as Safes, and safety deposit boxes, storage cabinets that are used for inventory and records, pass key access in companies, alarms, television monitors, and time clocks for recording of time. 3.Segregation of duties: Segregation of duties embodies the ideas that responsibility related activities should be delegated to different individuals and that record keeping for an asset should be kept separate from the physical custody of that same asset. When a customer walks into Culotti’s Pizza they can see employees making the pizzas in the oven area. The custody of the asset (in this case the pizza) is being kept separate from the front counter clerk. The front counter clerk stays out of the kitchen and is responsible for ringing up the sale in the register system (documenting the sale) and trading payment for the product. These are two duties that are within customer view that are kept segregat ed. 4.Independent Internal Verification: When walking in to pick up a pizza a  customer may see one employee on the cash register taking the cash from the customers to pay for the pizza. This employee is designated by the owner to maintain custody of the cash on hand. This internal control makes it easy for the owner to track down the person responsible if there are any discrepancies with the cash at the end of the day. A customer may also observe the employee when he or she is reading the register tape. This employee is verifying the transactions on the register tape with the cash that is in the drawer to make that each the amount of each transaction is accounted for by the cash that is in the drawer. 5.Documentation procedures: In the event of this story, there are no document procedures. 6.Other Controls: In consequence of employees handling the cash from the customers, each employee could be bonded, which allows insurance for the business due to the theft of the employees. Rotating the employees on the cash register at set times and making sure each closes their portion at the end of his or her shift. The procedure will allow the company to check each drawer and make sure it is correct. Finally, the company can do a background check on their employees. This information will provide the company with the information on potential employees and if he or she has ever been charged with a crime that relates to theft from another company. CHAPTER 7 PROBLEM SET B: P7-2B (PAGE 359) The board of trustees of a local church is concerned about the internal accounting controls pertaining to the offering collections made at weekly services. They ask you to serve on a three-person audit team with the internal auditor of the university and a CPA who has just joined the church. At a meeting of the audit team and the board of trustees you learn the following: 1. the church’s board of trustees has delegated responsibility for the financial management and audit of financial records to the finance committee. This group prepares the annual budget and approves major disbursements but is not involved in collections or record keeping. No audit has been made in recent years because the same trusted employee as kept church records and served as financial secretary for 15 years. The church does not carry any fidelity insurance. 2. The collection at the weekly service is taken by a team of ushers who volunteer to serve for 1 month. The ushers take the collection plates to a basement office at the rear of the  church. They hand their plates to the head usher and return to the church service. After all plates have been turned in, the head usher counts the cash received. They head usher then places the cash in the church safe along with a notation of the amount counted. The head usher volunteers to serve for 3 months. 3. The next morning the financial secretary opens the safe and recounts the collection. The secretary withholds $150-$200 in cash, depending on the cash expenditures expected for the week, and deposits the remainder of the collections in the bank. To facilitate the deposit, church members who contribute by check are asked to make their checks payable to â€Å"Cash†. 4. Each month the financial secretary reconciles the bank statement and submits a copy of the reconciliation to the board of trustees. The reconciliations have rarely contained any bank errors and have never shown any errors per book. Instructions: (a) Indicate the weakness in internal accounting control in the handling of collections. One weakness in the internal accounting control for handling collections includes the comprehensive use. In the event of internal audit control systems, they can be very broad in their application that creates a weaker audit control system (Vitez, O). A weakness in the handling of collections found could also be one since the cash is handled by multiple ushers and can become time consuming. This weakness also becomes difficult for management situations for the church members that attempt to maintain the proper business practices. The second weakness is the lack of knowledge that the individuals that handle and record the money have. If the ushers that count and record the money do not know how to properly record the fund this could lead to shortages. (b) List the improvements in internal control procedures that you plan to make at the next meeting of the audit team for (1) the ushers, (2) the hea d usher, (3) the financial secretary, and (4) the finance committee. The ushers will be on a rotation for a set amount of time so; every usher will at some point hold the responsibility of collecting the offering. A team of appointed ushers will take up the collection. The ushers will then take the collection to the back area of the church where the funds are counted. Once the money has been collected the ushers will then hand off the collection of funds to the head usher. The head usher will recount the funds received from the collection, and place the funds into the  church safe along with a total count of the funds that were collected. Improvements for the Financial Secretary: After re-counting the cash she should record how much was collected on an accounting record and record how much she kept on hand for that week and how much she deposited in the bank on this same record. Checks should be made payable to the name of the church for example â€Å"Saint Josephs or The First B aptist Church.† Improvements for the Finance Committee: The finance committee should have audits conducted at least once a year at random. The finance committee should run a background check on all members who handle cash. The finance committee should oversee the board of trustees and take final look at all financial records. The finance committee should get fidelity insurance. (c) What church policies should be changed to improve internal control? Audits should be done regularly to ensure the accuracy and that financial records are being completed ethically. I would suggest doing it on a quarterly basis. Additionally, the church should immediately obtain fidelity insurance. I see no problem with the monthly rotation of ushers who collect the donated funds; however they should stay in the basement office and serve as a witness to the counting of donated funds. The head usher should fill out a form stating how much has been received in cash and how much in check donations. The funds should then be placed in a sealed bag with the initials of those present written on the seal. Funds can continue to be placed in the church safe. The financial secretary needs to determine how much money is needed for the weekly expenditures and submit this amount along with the sealed bag of donations to the bank. She should then watch the bank verify the amount of cash and check donations in the sealed bag. The entire amount should be deposited and the financial secretary should then withdrawal the amount needed for the week either by withdrawal slip or check. Everything should be thoroughly documented in the bank’s financial records. Additionally, donations made in the bank form should never be written to cash but rather to the church itself to insure checks are going to the church and not for personal use. Many are still living while many others have long been gone. It is to the latter that monuments and museums were built to keep alive their memory in our hearts and mind. Public buildings, parks and plazas, streets and a few provinces have been named after them. Important dates and events are usually marked red in the calendar to remind us of their birth or death anniversary. During the celebration of these events, program speakers take turns extolling to high heavens whatever good they had done for the country. Sad enough the hero who is apparently taken for granted and therefore unsung is the poor teacher. Not having a pedigreed name, she has no influence, no power. She is regarded as belonging to the marginalized sector of society. Tactless people look down on her with contempt saying, â€Å"She’s only a teacher. † After all, unlike OFWs, teachers do not contribute to the national economy. What many do not seem to realize is that a teacher is truly a hero in her own way. For a teacher is not only about her lesson plans, her teaching methods, strategies and techniques. A teacher is also about her personal character, her values and her attitude. And more importantly a teacher is also about her missionary work which entails a great deal of sacrifice on her part and her family. Indeed, the pro-bono services that she renders involve numerous risks to life and limb. We have heard of teachers who were kidnapped for ransom, forced into marriage under pain of bodily harm, physically abused and the unfortunate, even beheaded. I remember a male teacher who reprimanded a student for provoking trouble in class. That afternoon the huffy father with fire in his eyes sought the teacher in school and mercilessly hacked him to death. I had a relative who was summoned to the Comelec office in Manila and made to explain her inadvertence to affix her signature on a pair of election forms. The financially distressed teacher was forced to take a long-term loan which she used to pay for her transportation fare, board and lodging while in Manila. In the meantime her family had to be sparing and frugal in order to tide them over until such period that the loan was fully paid. While other government employees are off after five, the teacher spends long hours of work at home writing lesson plans, checking test papers or preparing visual aids and similar teaching devices. Compared to those who work in the comfort of their office, thousands of our teachers go on long hours of journey to their far-flung stations over hill and dale, many times in harsh weather condition. It is no wonder that many of these teachers become decrepit long before their age or they get pitifully sick before retirement from the service. And yet their take-home pay is a mere pittance. Any increase in their starvation salary comes far apart and in trickles because this is dependent upon the members of Congress who remember the teachers only on election time. Come May of next year teachers will again be called upon to man the electoral ramparts of our democracy. They will be there to help safeguard the sanctity of the ballot, armed only with the nobility and integrity of their profession. Whatever people say to the contrary, the teacher as a hero is ready to lay down her life for the sake of country sans a loud flourish of trumpets. I salute our teachers as heroes, living or dead!
