IVF essays In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) translates to the term in glass (vitro) fertilisation essentially it is a technique whereby egg cells are fertilized outside the mother's body due to conception being impossible by normal sexual intercourse. There are many issues concerned when discussing the topic of IVF, this report aims to analyse these issues in detail. In Vitro Fertilisation is a fertility procedure, which first succeeded with the first test tube baby being born in 1978; the discovery was made by Dr Patrick Steptoe (an embryologist) and Dr Robert Edwards (a gynaecologist), in England. The first successful IVF treatment in the US took place in 1981, and there have been approximately 500,000 babies born world-wide with the aid of IVF treatment since then. The birth of Louise Brown, the first child born from IVF in 1978, was an important landmark in the management of infertility. When IVF was discovered it was initially designed to treat couples with damaged or absent fallopian tubes, but with its improved success rates IVF has been functional for patients with other causes of infertility, such as tumours, cysts, unexplained infertility and male infertility. The Merits of Equitable Fairness in the Context of Injunctions - Essay Example At times injunctive relief can be obtained in cases in connection with damages or as a substitute for damages.2 The merits of the fairness of injunctive relief are contained in Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981 which provides that: The High Court may be order (whether interlocutory or final) grant an injunction or appoint a receiver in all cases in which it appears to the court to be just and convenient to do so.3 Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981 therefore contemplates that injunctive relief will only be granted when the court considers it fair to do so. Fairness is derived from the use of the terms â€Å"just† and â€Å"convenient†. In order to understand how the terms just and convenient amount to fairness in the proceedings it is necessary to examine how courts exercise the jurisdiction for granting injunctive relief as provided for under Section 37(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981. ... As Charleton observed, a prohibitory injunction seeks to regulate one party by forcing that party to go back to behaviour that is consistent with the terms of a contract. Presumably, the party has either failed to act in certain way or has stopped acting in that way. By ordering a prohibitory injunction, the parties are expected to continue as if nothing had come between them when one party is forced to act in a way that he or she no longer wishes to act.7 It can be argued that the prohibitory injunction achieves equitable fairness because it remedies situations in which, a party to an agreement discontinues a contractual obligation to the detriment of the other party who has invested significant resources in reliance on the continued commitment on the part of the offending party not to do something in particular. However, according to Lord Cairns LC in Dolman v Allman, a prohibitory injunction will be granted â€Å"as a matter of course† and the court is not concerned about: ...a question of the balance of convenience or inconvenience, or the amount of damge or of injury.8 Prohibitory injunctions are therefore not concerned about what is fair and just between the parties, but rather, what is fair and just in terms of the contractual obligations of the parties. At the beginning of the play three witches tell Macbeth that in his life time he will become Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, as well as the King of Scotland. At first Macbeth is slow to believe the prediction of the witches, but after the first two prophecies come to fruition Macbeth becomes power hungry. Throughout the drama readers see both the rise and fall of Macbeth. Macbeths coming to power, through destructive and immoral means, creates a world of mistrust in most, if not all, characters. Shakespeare exploits this world of uncertainty and evil by adding many contradictions and paradoxes pertaining to trust and darkness. After the original murder of Duncan in Macbeths castle characters become very uneasy because there is obviously a traitor among them. Trust becomes a big issue among those in the castle, and others concerned for the well being of Scotland. Shakespeare emphasizes the trust versus mistrust issue by using specific literary devices. False face must hide what the false heart doth know(1.7.). Hiding the truth is Macbeth and Lady Macbeth main focus, along with attempting to murder anyone who stands in the way of the continuation of their royal linage. The question of who to trust is also seen when Macduff travels to England to seek the help of Malcolm, Malcolm tests him by making himself out to be a tyrant that has no interest in kingly duties and MacDuff reacts with despair, O my breast,/ Thy hope ends here!(4.3.) Malcolm then decides that MacDuff is indeed a loyal patron of Scotland and he may trust him. The uneasiness of the characters is amplified by Shakespeares emphasis on trust. It is extremely difficult to tell your friends from your enemies when a traitor is among them. Shakespeare also uses light and darkness to enhance the images of good and evil throughout the play. Macbeth often makes reference to darkness as if he is shamefully trying to run away and hide from his thoughts and actions. Even before the murder of Duncan he feels guilty. Macbeth says, Stars hide your fires,/ Let not light see my black Gillis 3 and deepest desires(1.4.) The darkness of the night is then embraced my both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as they attempt to hide their evil deeds from the public eye. It seems as though the characters in Macbeth believe that the cover of darkness is needed when committing acts of violence and corruption. The witches are also associated with darkness. Banquo refers to them as instruments of darkness (1.3) and Macbeth calls them secret, black, and midnight hags(4.1) These references give readers a sense that the witches are mischievous and evil rather than simply the messengers of good news and predictors of great fortunes. The darkness also seems to blur the lines between reality and the supernatural. All of the appearances of the witches occur during the night deep in the wood, where it is hard to tell reality apart from a paranoid imagination. The light and your eyes may play tricks on you causing you to think or believe something fictional. This is why Shakespeare only had the witches materialize under these circumstances, to enhance the effect of the supernatural. Light is also used as a metaphor for life. In Macbeths final soliloquy he says, And all our yesterdays have lighted fools/ The way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle! (5.5.) Shakespeare compares life to the flame of a candle. The candle can be extinguished easily and in the grand scheme of things it only burns for a tremendously small amount of time. It does not matter how long the candle has been burning it can be blown out at any point. This is an especially interesting comparison because those murdered in Macbeth are of all ages, from King Duncan to Macduffs children. Throughout this tragedy Shakespeare uses many literary devices to make certain aspects of his writing stand out to the reader. Too many people look at the negativities in music, Rap music to be specific. Rap music can have negative effects on those who listen to it, but just as easily and equally have a positive and beneficial outcome.Yes, many rappers use vulgar derogative terms to describe women and may influence its listeners to break the law or things of the like; but it can also open our eyes, we can learn new things from it and it can influence us to be better people and do things, good things, with our lives. Now Rap isn’t anything new it’s been around since about the 1970’s and been influencing those who listen to it for about 40 years now (â€Å"Rap†). When people hear the term â€Å"rap music† their initial thought will be à ¢â‚¬Å"that’s bad† or â€Å"that’s demeaning to women† which in a sense is true. For example the song â€Å"Walk this way† performed by Aerosmith and Run D.M. C. is about how a young high school student is lead through his first sexual experience by a debauched cheerleader. In a better known song â€Å"Make it Rain† by Fat Joe he says â€Å"Owwwww mami's body is banging, man/ she got it, man/ she does it all She gets it popping with no hands† And then there’s the song almost everybody knows by Jay-Z. â€Å"99 problems†, where he refers to women as â€Å"bitches†. Songs like these make women seem like tools and expendable creatures, and may influence children that listen to this type of rap to treat women as such, â€Å"but many of them were influenced as teenagers by gangster rap.Perhaps I should start using words like, niggers, hoes and slut-bitches since I would only be reflecting my society's music† (Leary ). But the best example, to make this point clear, is the music video â€Å"Every girl† by â€Å"Young Money†. In the video there are females dressed promiscuously throughout and the lyricist admits to wishing he could have sexual intercourse with every girl in the world. There many other songs that contain this type of disrespect towards the female sex, which gives a more credible argument to those who don’t like rap.Another point people may make against Rap music is the fact that many Rappers Rap and live very violently. Eminem is at the top of my list when it comes to being violent. There’s the song â€Å"Who knew? † in which he defends himself by saying: â€Å"I never knew I, knew I'd effect this kid/ I never knew I'd, get him to slit his wrist/ I never knew I'd, get him to hit this bitch† Although the song in and of itself is a bit ironic, Eminem acknowledges the fact that now he knows he can influence his listeners with his music.And i n â€Å"Love the Way you Lie† in which he says the following verse â€Å"If she ever tries to fucking leave again/ Im'a tie her to the bed and set this house on fire. † we see again the violence, and the music video for said song is of a couple who constantly fight and by the end of the song the couples house is up in flames. â€Å"One study found that young subjects who watched violent rap videos were more accepting of violent actions†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Copley) and these lyrics that we very well hear over the radio and in our everyday lives promote breaking or disregarding the law, and many people still stop and wonder why the world is so violent.But like stated at the beginning of this paper there is a bright side to this moon. Before writing this paper laziness overcame me and I began to procrastinate and started listening to music and then the song â€Å"Airplanes Part 2† by B. o. b. feat. Eminem came on. Towards the end of the song Eminem says the words  "Pretend he procrastinated had no motivation/ Pretend he just made excuses that were so paper thin they could blow away with the wind† which is what I was doing and it â€Å"turned me on† and opened my eyes.As the song finishes Eminem continues to rap in third person about himself and how if it wasn’t for this one moment in his life that he had not chased his dream he wouldn’t be who he wanted to be. I then proceeded to get up and write this paper. So this song had an effect, a positive one on me. And it can have similar effects on others who listen to it. The language most rappers use is profanity, but a handful of rappers use uncommon words to express themselves, which can lead to one finding out the definition of the word and later possibly using them in school work.For example Eminem uses the word â€Å"antidisestablishmentarianism† which is a political position in the Anglican Church that chooses to withdraw support from certain churches. Music like everything else has a good side and a bad side.Most people ignore the good and disregard Rap music as a whole. The tower is located to the south bank , and it was constructed by Phillip II of France. Later on in the 19t century, the tower was used by Alexandre Dumas as the setting for his romance play titled La Tour de Nesle . According to the play, the tower represented the place where, in the 14th century, the queen of France was murdered. Alexandre based this story on a legend that had existed in the 15th century that was titled Tour de Nesle Affair. The play revolves around the events that transpired in the year 1314 when the daughters in law of Phillip IV were accused of committing adultery. Because of these accusations, their alleged lovers were executed after days of being tortured and flayed. Thus, the tower was a symbol of mystery and fear. It was believed that each morning, bodies of young men would be found floating with their bodies slaughters either by sword or spear. Legend has it that the queen was on a mission to revenge all men. Thus, she would invite men into her chambers for a romantic night only for her to kill them and throw them into the river. La tour de Nesles is a rare French movie because it is a color movie. Te tower is gloomy , and its horrors are represented in the blue, green waters of the Seine. This is because the queen usually threw her one night lovers into the waters after their overnight endeavors. However, this was just a legend that was never proven true. It is in this tower where the queen awaits her young lovers to arrive before they were ruthlessly murdered by henchmen. Characterization The story is made up of several characters. Silvana Pampanini plays the role of Marguerite de Bourgogne the queen while Pierre Brasseur takes the part of Jehan Buridan. There are two princesses namely; princess Jeanne and Blanche acted by Christine Grado and Lia Di Leo respectively. The rest of the characters include: Paul Guers (Gaultier dAulnay), Jacques Toja (Philippe dAulnay), Andr Gabriello (Le grand mnestrel), Nelly Kaplan (Alice), Rellys (Archer), Cadet Rivers (Le tavernier), Louis Viret (Le chef des assassins), Constant Rmy (Landry), Marcel Raine (Orsini) and Michel Bouquet (Louis X). In the story, Margaret of Burgundy, the queen of France at the time was an unfaithful woman. She is depicted as a heartless woman who killed her lovers without a second thought. Moreover, she is witty , and this helps her to keep her affairs a secret. One night, two noble men, were lured into the tower. They had gone with the expectations of a romantic evening filled with passion but instead they were met by a vengeful woman who had a grudge against all men. Later in the evening, the queen manages to kill Phillippe but Buridan, the second man manages to escape. He begins to blackmail the queen by threatening to expose her to the king unless she makes him a prime minister. Buridan, on the other hand, is depicted as a tricky man who manages to escape the queens clutches, hence saving his life. When he decides to blackmail the queen, he is seen as an opportunistic man who takes advantage of any available opportunity to benefit himself. Although initially a victim, the expected reaction would be to report the queen for her wrong doings and get his dead friend the justice he deserves. However, he opts to use the information he has to benefit himself, thus he is greedy and self centered. Moreover, he is immoral and promiscuous because he went to the tower with the expectation of a passionate night , yet it was common knowledge that the queen was a married woman. However, it should be noted that the story is not an accurate representation of French history. However, the story is an entertaining and highly emotional play. Color and shade have been used to give the story an expressionists touch in order to add emphasize on the dark, sinister plot. The dark shade also gives the film a sense of historical realism. The story revolves around two major themes. These are revenge and politics. However, sex,, death, greed and betrayal are also evident in the plays. The queen is driven by her desire to avenge all men. She is beautiful and used her wits and beauty to lure young, clueless men to her chambers. She then kills them and throws hem into the river. Politics, on the other hand, is very dominant in the story. For instance, when Buridan escapes, instead of reporting the queen so that she could be punished for a murder, he decided to use the knowledge he had to further his political aspirations. This shows that to him, political power outweighs justice. Betrayal in the story is evident throughout. For instance, the queen betrays the king when she has affairs with other men. Also, she betrays her lovers when she has then killed to quench her thirst for revenge. So many people betray and blackmail each other in exchange for political power throughout the play. Death is also prevalent in the film, making it extremely sad to watch. For instance the death of the male nobles men who were killed by the queen. It was said that everyday, bodies would be found floating on the Seine. This shows that death was a normal occurrence in that society. The drama has played the role of passing the influential antifeminist message to the world. The message rocked the stages in Europe when it had premiered for the first time. The general concepts depicted in the play lie in addressing the key issues in society, such as the gender imbalance, political influences and unprincipled traditions where murder seems to be the norm. The play is criticizing the political influence that the old generations had been used to posing it as a challenge to the new generation through sensitizing it. According to the book, political power is greatly valued, and those in high political positions are willing to do anything to maintain them or move higher. This will indeed help in ensuring that the next generations will become much more sensitized and can make some visualized judgments. Immorality will also be termed as the historical functions, which still have grounds in the new and future generations.
